A Family Vision Turned Brewpub Success

Ten Sleep Brewing Co. is more than just a craft brewery—it’s the realization of a long-held dream by the Smith family of Ten Sleep, Wyoming. Born from necessity and nurtured with passion, the brewery represents a transformation of both a family farm and a personal journey into the thriving craft beer movement.

A Vision Rooted in Resilience

After nearly 40 years as a contractor and developer—specializing in aircraft hangar projects across six western states—Cole Smith found himself at a crossroads. A challenging financial setback following a large storage project, compounded by the economic slowdown of 2007-08, led him to a pivotal decision: make the family farm pay its way. Inspired by the burgeoning craft brewery movement, Cole spent two years researching, writing a prospectus, and seeking investors, determined to turn adversity into opportunity.

A Family-Driven Dream

The vision for Ten Sleep Brewing Co. was always a family affair. With support from friends, family, and a community that believed in their potential, the Smiths took on the challenge of transforming an old barn wing—a former repository for greasy truck parts and butchered elk remains—into a state-of-the-art brewery. The build began in early March 2013, with hands-on help from family and friends. Remarkably, they managed to complete 90% of the construction work themselves, turning a dusty, forgotten space into a welcoming taproom and brewing facility.

Expertise and Collaboration

A turning point for the project came with the involvement of Jeremy Tofte, the founder and owner of Thai Me Up Brewpub in Jackson. Invited by a mutual friend, Jeremy quickly became a key partner, contributing his expertise as a brew master and consultant. Under his guidance, and with his on-site brewer winning prestigious awards at the Great American Brew Fest, Ten Sleep Brewing Co. set a strong foundation for quality and innovation.

Opening the Doors to the Community

The transformation was complete when the build officially ended on October 15, 2013, with a clean bill of health from the local inspector. From that moment, the taproom opened its doors, inviting patrons to experience the tangible results of hard work, family commitment, and community support. Carol Smith, a familiar face behind the tap, embodies the warmth and personal touch that define Ten Sleep Brewing Co.
